 The meeting was called to order by Moderator Walt Atwood at 7:32 p.m. who also provided the opening prayer.  Sandy is not in attendance as Ruth Baker passed away at approximately 6:15 p.m. at the hospital and he was with Bob.
 The December minutes were reviewed, approved and accepted with one minor change.

  • As of 1/11/2010, pledges are at about 64% - right on target
  • 55% of budgeted income has been collected – should be at 59%
  • Investments are down – 37% of budget
  • Total expenses are at 57% of budget
 Financial Secretary      
  • End of year statements are done and will be going out
  • Collected $351 for Haiti Relief on 1/17/2010
  • Pledge dollars are coming in well

 Flower Committee
·         Had over 90 poinsettias adorning the sanctuary for Christmas
·         Had a number of compliments on the simple but beautiful display
·         Did not receive orders from Ruth & Bob Baker or from Betty Bryant who always remember   their loved ones so the Flower Committee purchased plants for them and delivered them after Christmas.  Also delivered a plant to Trudie Sunderland as she was unable to make it to church
 Christian Action                                         
·         1/17/2010 & 1/24/2010 – Gift of Warmth drive
·         1/31/2010 – Second version of Soup & Casserole sale.  Proceeds will go to OCWM
·         Will be working with Janet Mellon, of Southington Social Services, on a monthly basis to coordinate what is especially needed for that month
o        February is baby month – diapers, wipes, clothes, etc
·         Mystery Dinner dates are May 8, 14, 15. Tickets go on sale March 21, 2010

·         Received quote to have the stairs outside both sets of narthex doors repointed
·         The railings also need to be repaired
·         Safety inspection was done
·         One pipe to the main boiler has a leak
·         There is a water stain in Fellowship Hall – found two loose shingles
·         The door to the fire escape has been fixed
·         The toilet in the men’s room keeps sticking
 At Large                                                    
  • John Smayda did the children’s message on 1/17/2010 and it was well-received
    • Need to have Kathy recruit others to help assist her with this
  • Question on why are the offering plates not placed on the Communion Table?  This was a decision by Council that was made a long time ago
  • Suggestion that the Memorial Flowers should be recognized during Joys & Concerns – mention who they are in memory of

 Christian Education
  • 2/7/2010 No Bake “Super Snack” sale
  • 2/7/2010 Valentine’s Day Party for YFF right after church – asked for Council approval at this meeting – approval was given
 Safe Church Committee
·         Training will be held in February for those teachers who have not yet been trained
 Deacons    
  • 2/6/10 – Spaghetti Supper and Pound Auction
  • Trying to revitalize the ushering program
  • The Lenten Series – BC Drama – soap operas from the Old Testament of the Bible

 It was noted that the Braille hymnals are on the floor under the pews in the back of the church.  They should be stored somewhere safe or try to find another church that could use them

 Old Business
  • The new sound system has not yet been completed
 New Business
  • Stewardship – Theme this year will be A Season of Sharing – a five (5) week program
    • A different topic each week
    • The Sunday sermon will coordinate with the Stewardship topic
    • This year the budget will be created based on pledges – instead of seeking pledges based on the amount of the budget – this is a slightly different approach than what has been done in the past
    • Expecting a tough year
 
  • Now For the Future
    • Sandy is working on a draft letter for Now For the Future.  The church has not received enough pledges to fulfill the commitment that was made to Silver Lake
    • The program runs through June, 2012
  The next Council meeting will be held on February 10, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
 The meeting was adjourned at 8:32 p.m. following a closing prayer.
