A Great Start in Life! 50+ years of serving our children's educational, emotional, and social needs, as we help them prepare for kindergarten!
Classes: 3 year old children attend: (small class size) Tuesday and Thursday morning 9:00 to 11:30 am 4-5 year old children attend: Monday-Wednesday-Friday morning9:00 to 11:30 am OR Monday-Wednesday-Friday afternoon12:30 to 3:00 pm Our teachers work as a team and we have 3 classrooms for your child to move around and experience different toys and centers to use their imaginations and develop better social skills with their peers.
Curriculum:
Free play (helps with a child’s social and emotional development plus improvesimagination)
Singing (promotes better listening and language skills)
Story time (improves listening, comprehension and cognitive skills)
Handwork (works on fine motor and listening skills)
Games (children develop listening and gross (large) motor skills)
Show-n-tell (develops the self confidence to speak in front of other children in a fun, non-threatening way)
Outdoor play (develops better gross (large) motor skills)
Snack time (children enjoy social time and we teach better manners)
Our program also includes: walks, visits from people in our community, a year end bus field trip, sing-a-longs with parents, celebrating holidays, a final graduation for the 4-5 year olds and a final formal sing-a-long for our 3 year old class.
Brief history about our school: Plantsville Community Nursery School is non-denominational and is the oldest continually operational nursery school in the state with classes for 3-5 year olds.We have communicated with Southington kindergarten teachers to make sure our program meets the best needs of children to prepare them for their next big step into elementary school. Opened in October 1955 by the mother’s club of Plantsville Congregational Church, the nursery school began with Mrs. Ruth Nelson, Mrs. Helen Macleod and Mrs. Otley Kania teaching 16 children in the 4 year old class and 17 children in the 3 year old class.Each year the teaching staff has provided children in Southington and surrounding towns with an educational experience that will prepare them for entering kindergarten. Over the years the program has improved to provide the best up to date experience for each child in socialization, self-reliance, cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills and improving imagination while still caring for the basic needs of 3-5 year olds.We are proud that in the 55+ years we have been in operation, we have had only 28 teachers, reflecting a low turnover rate that has helped to keep consistency throughout our program. For the Christmas holiday the children enjoyed singing for our new church secretary, the senior citizens luncheon (put on by the Rotary Club), and to the children at Plantsville Elementary School. Even the parents had broad smiles as they listened to the children at our December sing-a-long! In January we will talk about winter weather and the animals they see, participate in a “winter Olympics” with ice skating around the school, slalom run and snowball basket toss. Then we’ll warm our tummies with hot chocolate around a pretend campfire. Our five senses (seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling) will be enjoyed by making Jello®.There will be sorting, animal stories; finding out about different homes for people and animals, and having fun with color, shapes, numbers and the alphabet.It is also the time of year when we prepare for conferences with the parents next month and observe how well the children are doing in school so far. My! It sounds like a busy month and amongst it all, the children will be laughing, and having fun with their friends—just what nursery school is all about. Our Open House will be held on Sunday, January 8th from 2-4 p.m. If anyone is interested in checking out our school for a child or grandchild, we still have several openings available for the 2012-2013 school session.
